Foresight Shields Crown King Preventative burns helping keep Lane 2 Fire outside town
JJ Hensley - Jul. 3, 2008 12:00 AM The Arizona Republic
Wildland firefighters have managed to keep the Lane 2 Fire out of Crown King since Sunday, but the work of the U.S. Forest Service and area residents over the past couple of years deserves just as much credit for saving, so far, the old Arizona mining community.
The fire grew to 9,400 acres by early Thursday, but crews have set a solid containment line around 10 percent of the blaze, including areas on the northwestern edge of the fire as it approached Crown King and on the southeastern edge as it neared cabins in the Horsethief Basin area, said Dick Fleishman, a fire-information officer.
The outcome might have been worse if Forest Service workers hadn't burned out an area along a forest road known as Senator Highway a couple of years ago, robbing the region of the brush that fuels wildfires and creating a natural barrier around the community.
The move wasn't popular with some residents because it took some of the area's natural beauty and left charred land near the roadway, said Todd Underwood, who lives in Crown King.
It is part of the Silver King Demonstration Area Thinning Project.
We have received numerous inquiries in regard to the bright colored flagging on trees around Friendly Pines Road and Silver King Circle.
The Fire District sent a special mailer to all Groom Creek Residents regarding the thinning project in Groom Creek. Click below to read the contents of that mailer.
For nearly an hour, Marianne Shannon thought Stevenson Ranch's luck had run out.
The winds seemed so fast, much stronger than in 2003, when the last massive fire threatened her home. She watched from her cul-de-sac Monday afternoon as flames exploded just a few hundred feet away. A firefighter told her to take down her curtains to prevent them from igniting. Gusts knocked down the faux headstones she'd set up for Halloween.
Then as quickly as the danger came, the threat passed.
"The firemen were saying we were pretty well protected," Shannon said.
