Groom Creek Fire District is now accepting applications for Volunteer and Reserve Firefighters. Position descriptions and applications are available by clicking the links below. Applications will be accepted until further notice.

All Reserve Firefighters must be certified Arizona Firefighter I & II, EMT-Basic and Basic Wildland Firefighting within 6 months of hire date. All reserves must pass a written entrance exam, oral interview and physical agility test. Groom Creek Fire District will perform a background investigation on all applicants considered for Reserve Firefighter Positions.

Volunteer Firefighters do not need any formal training or experience. Regardless of your abilities and your availability, we have positions that need your assistance.

Position Description:

Volunteer/Reserve Firefighter
Division – Operations
Supervised By – Captain / Engineer

General Description –

  • Protects life and property by performing firefighting, emergency medical services, hazardous materials, and other duties, as assigned.
  • Maintains Fire/EMS equipment, apparatus and facilities as assigned.

Supervision –

  • Works under the direction of a Chief Officer, Captain or Engineer as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities –

  • Responds as dispatched within the Groom Creek Fire District and on mutual aid assignments.
  • Performs firefighting activities including driving fire apparatus, operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose, and performing fire combat, containment, extinguishing and overhaul tasks.
  • Performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water and removing debris.
  • Writes reports accurately documenting incident data, patient assessment and patient treatment.
  • Operates radio and other communication equipment.
  • Maintains Fire/EMS equipment, apparatus and facilities.
  • Performs minor repairs to District equipment.
  • Performs general maintenance work, maintains and tests hose, maintains and tests apparatus pumps, cleans and polishes fire apparatus
  • Assists in developing plans for special assignments such as emergency preparedness, training programs, firefighting, etc.
  • Functions within the Chain of Command to manage, direct, advise and evaluate operations personnel.
  • Participates in drills, attends classes and other training in related subjects.
  • Maintains required certifications in fire suppression and EMS.
  • Meets district continuing education requirements.
  • Maintains positive working relationship with the public and other GCFD personnel.

Other Duties –

  • Assists in training new members as assigned.
  • Participates on Fireground Operations Team at all structure fire calls.

Tools and Equipment Used –

  • Emergency medical apparatus, fire apparatus, fire pumps, hoses, ladders, other standard firefighting tools, hand tools, saws, emergency medical equipment, radio, pager, personal computer, telephone.

Physical Demands –

  • The physical demands described herein are representative of the abilities required to perform the essential functions of the position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform essential functions. While performing this function, members are required to stand, sit, walk, talk and hear, use hands to finger, handle or operate objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The member may be required frequently to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and smell. The member may be required to frequently lift and/or move up to 50 lbs and occasionally move up to 175 lbs.
